Family fun at Creve Coeur Lake
Sunday, August 28th, 2011Maryland Heights is home to Creve Coeur Park, among the area’s most popular parks, which is run by St. Louis County. The park boasts a 320-acre lake as well as the picturesque “Dripping Springs” waterfall.
The park was the first in the St. Louis County Park system and was established in 1945. Originally a resort, Creve Coeur Lake had hosted many boating events decades before the park officially opened its gates.
In 1882, the Mississippi Valley regatta was held at the lake. It also held the Creve Coeur Regatta, the yearly meets of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen in 1904 (the rowing contest for the 1904 Summer Olympics).
As a trendy summertime resort at the beginning of the 1900s, the lake is now known for its paved walking trails and biking trail, playground equipment, picnic pavilions, boating opportunities, athletic fields and a lot more.
The national park is the biggest in the St. Louis County Parks system and incorporates Creve Coeur Lake. The park has facilities for picnicking, tennis courts, multi-purpose athletic fields, and an archery course. Creve Coeur Park contains Crystal Springs Quarry Golf Course, an 18-hole course opened in 2001.
